Learning The Guitar

Learning to play the guitar is an exciting prospect but where to start can confuse anyone.
Should you learn strumming, fingerstyle, chords or notes, learn to read TAB or standard notation are just a few of the decisions that can be made in order to get off to the right start.

Perhaps the most important place to begin is with the style of guitar music that you like most and the other decisions should then be easier to make.

If you like rock or blues music for example, learning to read TAB and playing with a pick is probably the most useful way forward whereas if classical guitar is your choice then standard notation and fingerstyle would be the best approach.

Whichever you choose, a few private lessons with a good guitar teacher would be very beneficial and get you off to a good technique and good habits right from the start. Furthermore, an experienced guitarist can give advice about all sorts of things such as adjustments to bridge and neck action if necessary. A guitar that is well set-up can be easier to play and that is a very important consideration at the beginning of your learning experience.

Of course there are many free guitar videos and lessons online that are excellent as well as many courses that charge a fee. Whatever you choose to do, becoming a very good guitar player takes a lot of time and effort and the best progress is made with regular practice on a daily basis.
